In its early life, Mouvement Social (MS) has been relying on its own resources and individual donors to achieve its projects and goals. Anyway, in the beginning, nearly all tasks were handled by volunteers, so that expenses were at a minimum level. In the 1960s, under the presidency of Fouad Chehab, MS has also been partly funded by public agencies that charged it with tasks related to social studies, research, surveys and inspection works, mostly in social and health-related issues. With this experience at hand, a ‘Studies and Surveys Office’ was officially established with two professional sociologists, that carried out, for a fee, more surveys for the government (Ministry of Labor, National Social Security Fund, Central administration for Statistics…), as well as for international organizations. This activity helped out in assuring regular income for the MS.
Starting 1975, with the civil war, MS had to rely more and more on foreign private non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to fund its relief and development activities. This trend has been going on till now, while UN agencies and public development agencies from major countries have later on stepped in as major funders for MS projects, as shown in the financial reports for the past 4 years.
As we publish these figures and related information, MS wants to assure that transparency is one of its key concerns and priorities.
